The Money Pit Mystery by Rupert Furneaux - Paperback USED Nonfiction
Only 1 left in stockFor anyone's taking, a king's ransom. But no one has been able to take it from Oak Island -- WHY? The Money Pit on Oak Island might very well have been the source of inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe's famous mystery, The Gold Bug. Yet treasure hunters the world over have known about the gold buried on Oak Island for almost 200 years and have been frustrated in their attempts to recover it because it is protected by the tidal movement of the ocean around the island. Since 1795, countless adventurers and many well-financed syndicates have tried to wrest the gold from its hiding place. Some treasure hunters claim it is Captain Kidd's cache of Spanish gold and silver, other maintain just as stoutly that British gold is buried in the pit -- gold intended for use by Sir Henry Clinton to wage war against the colonies. . . . To the seekers of gold, it makes no difference who put it there -- if it is there -- and all of them are sure it is -- it is estimated to be worth $10,000,000 -- a king's ransom by any standard.

Bloody Jack (Pirate Adventures) by L.A. Meyer - Paperback
Bloody Jack : Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy (Bloody Jack Adventures Book 1) by L. A. Meyer
Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of eighteenth-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas.
There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret. This could be the adventure of her life--if only she doesn't get caught. . . .From Publishers Weekly
"I prays for deliverance," confides Mary Faber, orphaned at eight years old by a pestilence that relegates her to a life of begging and petty crime on the streets of London. After her gang's leader is killed, she dons his clothing, trading in the name Mary for Jack, and takes to the high seas aboard the HMS Dolphin. Meyer evokes life in the 18th-century Royal Navy with Dickensian flair. He seamlessly weaves into Jacky's first-person account a wealth of historical and nautical detail at a time when pirates terrorized the oceans. Interspersed are humorous asides about her ongoing struggle to maintain "The Deception" (she fashions herself a codpiece and emulates the "shake-and-wiggle action" of the other boys when pretending to use the head, for instance), she earns her titular nickname in a clash with pirates and survives a brief stretch as a castaway before her true identity is discovered (the book ends as she's about to be shipped off to a school for young ladies in Boston). The narrative's dialect occasionally falters, but this detracts only slightly from the descriptive prose ("He's got muscles like a horse and looks to have a brain to match") and not at all from the engine driving this sprawling yarn: the spirited heroine's wholly engaging voice. Her budding sexuality (which leads to a somewhat flawed plotline involving a secret shipboard romance) and a near-rape by a seaman mark this one for older readers, who will find the salty tale a rattling good read. Ages 12-up.

In the Belly of the Bloodhound by Louis A. Meyer - Paperback
In the Belly of the Bloodhound: Being an Account of a Particularly Peculiar Adventure in the Life of Jacky Faber (Bloody Jack Adventures Book 4) by Louis A. Meyer
The British crown has placed a price on Jacky's head, so she returns to the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston to lay low. But the safe haven doesn't last--a school outing goes awry as Jacky and her classmates are abducted and forced into the hold of the Bloodhound, a ship bound for the slave markets on the Barbary Coast. All of Jacky's ingenuity, determination, and plain old good luck will be put to the test as she rallies her delicate classmates to fight together and become their own rescuers.
From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 7 Up—The impudent Jacky Faber, on whose head the King of England has put a price for piracy, is back in L. A. Meyer's fourth Bloody Jack adventure (Harcourt, 2006). This time, Jacky and her classmates at the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls are kidnapped and forced onto a slave ship, the Bloodhound. The slavers intend to sell the girls into the harems of North Africa. Of course, Jacky refuses to go quietly and soon has hatched a daring escape plan. It's wonderful to see the girls rise to the challenge and use their brains to outwit their male captors. The relationship between Jacky and her arch-nemesis Clarissa Howe is a hoot. —Tricia Melgaard, Centennial Middle School, Broken Arrow, OK

injury, the Lorelei Lee is confiscated to carry female convicts to populate New South
Wales. Not one to give in to self-pity, Jacky rallies her sisters to “better” their position—
resulting in wild escapades, brushes with danger, and much hilarity."[Jacky] uses her wit, beauty, charm, and numerous skills to wiggle herself out of yet another fine mess. . . . Easy to read and entertaining."—VOYA
"Meyer knows how to spin an exciting yarn, particularly on the high seas. Fans will enjoy watching this irrepressible and decidedly uninhibited heroine make the best of yet another seemingly hopeless predicament."—Booklist

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up–It's May of 1904, and 16-year-old Maggie Bennet should be planning her debut into Newport society. Unfortunately, her father has other plans. He takes her to Yellowstone National Park, following a lead on Maggie's mother, who disappeared the year before and is presumed dead. Upon their arrival, Papa reveals that they are broke and he has taken a job as architect at the park. As Maggie tries to start a new life and piece together the mystery of her mother's connection to Yellowstone, she is torn between her conflicting desires. She longs to take her proper place in society, something offered by George Graybull, the rich and powerful but arrogant and shallow older man who is courting her. At the same time, she wants freedom and true love, represented by Tom, the kind but poor son of a geologist. The story follows Maggie's struggle to overcome her own prejudices and society's limitations. The wilderness of Yellowstone, which is lovingly and beautifully depicted, reflects her inner turmoil and yearning for freedom, deemed madness in her bohemian mother. Though the style doesn't always ring true to the period and the plot and characterization sometimes lack subtlety, the gradual revelation of the truth about Maggie's mother, the developing relationship between Maggie and Tom, and the thrilling episodes sprinkled throughout will engage readers.Erin Carrillo, formerly at Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL
