The Man Who Lived in Sorcy Wood by Brendan McNamee - Paperback RARE Book

In a town of speaking statues and amusement arcades, a town with a conscious hunger for material success and an unconscious thirst for miracles, one morning a man leaves his good job and house and goes to live in the nearby Sorcy Wood.  There he might have remained for years, an object of bafflement and ridicule to his former neighbours, had his presence not obstructed the plans of the town's two most powerful men and deadliest enemies, the priest and the local businessman.   After years of bitter resignation to his lowly position in the church, the priest discovers that God has given him a mission, to fell Sorcy Wood and erect an airport to bring pilgrims to that isolated shrine from all over the world.  After years of building up his empire of gambling and snooker emporiums, the businessman discovers a way to truly immortalise his own name, to fell Sorcy Wood and erect the largest holiday camp ever imagined to bring tourists from all over the world.  All that stand in the way of their schemes, apart from each other, is the lone figure of the man who refuses to leave Sorcy Wood.

Brendan McNamee was born in County Donegal in 1955 and now lives in London.  His first book, The Man Who Lived in Sorcy Wood, is a remarkable adult fable exploring the psyche of modern rural Ireland, and must rank as among the most original and striking debuts in recent Irish fiction.

Cool commentary on current human peccadilloes

    MACROSCOPIC TOPICS

Toe-holds on the slopes of the MATTERHORN of

    Human Maturation.

It is a struggle for each human to make the long climb from infancy through adulthood to the final quietus. These topics do not pretend to tell any one human how to live their life; they only try to encourage thinking on the various phases.

    EXX-RAYS FROM THE AGING CAGE

Visions from the good and productive side of growing older.

The purpose in these visions is to throw some light on the need for a positive attitude. Exercise for the brain keeps major negatives outside the cage. Together with appropriate physical initiatives that make sure the mental walls are free from sealed cage doors.

    COSMIC CYBERTREKS

Explorations in the mega void of the universe a challenge.

Time is eternal, and space is infinite in the cosmos. In terms of measuring events in the universe, where occurrences are matured over many millions of years, using Earths rules as a guide for establishing cosmic laws is an invisible drop of spit in the seas. The trek experiences are fascinating and challenge accepted dogma for so many concepts of what is logical out in the void.

What Would the Founders Say? by Larry Schweikart - Hardcover Nonfiction

The #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of A Patriot's History of the United States examines ten current challenges.

America is at a crossroads. We face two options: continue our descent toward big government, higher taxes, less individual liberty, and more debt or pull our country back on the path our Founding Fathers planned for us. But that path isn't always so easy to see.

Following the success of his previous books, conservative historian Larry Schweikart tackles some of the key issues confronting our nation today: education, government bailouts, gun control, health care, the environment, and more. For each he asks, "What would the founders say?" and sets out to explore our history and offer wisdom to help us get back on track. What would really be compatible with the vision that Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and the other founders had for America?

Written in Schweikart's informal yet informative style, What Would the Founders Say? is sure to delight his fans and anyone looking for a little clarity on tough issues.

Screaming with Joy : The Life of Allen Ginsberg by Graham Caveney - Hardcover

The first fully illustrated tribute to Allen Ginsberg--the best-known American poet of the post-war generation, mother of the Beats, and walking embodiment of Western counterculture.

Ginsberg's poetry, influenced by the writings of Walt Whitman and the spontaneous prose of his friend Jack Kerouac, is open, forthright, didactic, and written fast without revision. Much of his writing has a raw, confessional quality appropriate to his roles as one of the first gay spokespeople and a leading anti-Vietnam War activist.

From the publication of his first book, Howl and Other Poems, in 1956, Ginsberg became known as the champion of counterculture concerns: sexual freedom, pacifism, drug experimentation, opposition to censorship and authority, and acceptance of Eastern religions. The youngest of the Beat writers, Ginsberg was a lover to both William Burroughs and Kerouac and acted as the prophet and public face of the group--serving as Kerouac's unofficial agent for On the Road and helping Burroughs bring The Naked Lunch to the attention of publishers.

Screaming with Joy, overflowing with more than 150 photographs and illustrations, is a passionate documentary of Ginsberg's zealous life. His untimely death in 1997 silenced a voice that expanded the capacity of our language, and his cultural icon status makes his work and life of even greater interest today.

  • The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein - Paperback VINTAGE 1961

The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein - Paperback VINTAGE 1961

The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas was written in 1933 by Gertrude Stein in the guise of an autobiography authored by Alice B. Toklas, who was her lover. It is a fascinating insight into the art scene in Paris as the couple were friends with Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They begin the war years in England but return to France, volunteering for the American Fund for the French Wounded, driving around France, helping the wounded and homeless. After the war Gertrude has an argument with T. S. Eliot after he finds one of her writings inappropriate. They become friends with Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Hemingway. It was written to make money and was indeed a commercial success. However, it attracted criticism, especially from those who appeared in the book and didn't like the way they were depicted.

Opus Pistorum by Henry Miller - Hardcover FIRST EDITION

5.0 out of 5 stars grinds like a miller

Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2012

Henry Miller wrote this when he was all but broke in France and in such dire states he wrote for 50 francs a page and he did so at around the time he was involved with Anaias Nin. Every single page (almost) that you open the book at will contain language that will blow you away (bad pun), even those who profess no imagination at all will be fired up with the content and it is perhaps the most explicit and for me the best written book of its genre and I include Nins the Delta of Venus in that group.--rabigyin

Hawk O'Toole's Hostage by Sandra Brown - Hardcover 20th Century Classics

To Hawk O'Toole, she was a pawn in a desperate gamble to help his people. To Miranda Price, he was a stranger who'd done the unthinkable: kidnapped her and her young son off a train full of sight-seeing vacationers. Now, held hostage on a distant reservation for reasons she cannot at first fathom, Miranda finds herself battling a captor who is by turns harsh and tender, mysteriously aloof and dangerously seductive.

Hawk had assumed that Miranda Price, the beautiful ex-wife of Representative Price, would be as selfish and immoral as the tabloids suggested. Instead, she seems genuinely afraid for her son's life--and willing to risk her own to keep him safe. But committed to a fight he didn't start, Hawk knows he can't afford to feel anything but contempt for his prisoner. To force the government to reopen the Lone Puma Mine, he must keep Miranda at arm's length, must remember that she is his enemy--even when she ignites his deepest desires.

Slowly, Miranda begins to learn what drives this brooding, solitary man, to discover the truth about his tragic past. But it will take a shocking revelation to finally force her to face her own past and the woman she's become, and to ask herself: Is it freedom she really wants...or the chance to stay with Hawk forever?

Sizzling entertainment from the first tantalizing scene to the last, Hawk O'Toole's Hostage is one of Sandra Brown's classic romances available in hardcover for the first time.

Coronavirus and Christ by John Piper - Paperback

"This is a time when the fragile form of this world is felt. The seemingly solid foundations are shaking. The question we should be asking is, Do we have a Rock under our feet? A Rock that cannot be shaken―ever?"―John Piper

On January 11, 2020, a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) reportedly claimed its first victim in the Hubei province of China. By March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization had declared a global pandemic. In the midst of this fear and uncertainty, it is natural to wonder what God is doing.

In Coronavirus and Christ, John Piper invites readers around the world to stand on the solid Rock, who is Jesus Christ, in whom our souls can be sustained by the sovereign God who ordains, governs, and reigns over all things to accomplish his wise and good purposes for those who trust in him. What is God doing through the coronavirus? Piper offers six biblical answers to that question, showing us that God is at work in this moment in history.

Anchored in the Storm : Pursuing Christ in the Midst of Life's Trials by Adam Holland - Paperback

On January 2, 2014, Adam Holland woke up on the floor of his bedroom. Scattered on the floor around him were objects from his nightstand: a glass of water, clock, watch, lamp—all on the floor. He was in a haze but still knew that something wasn’t right. Adam hurriedly picked everything up, tried to dry the carpet from the water, and then went back to sleep. He later woke up with a vague idea of what had happened in the night—and also with a mild black eye and bruised face. Thus started the trial of—and for—Adam Holland’s life. After discovering that Adam had a brain tumor, his doctors wanted to do further testing. The final blow came when one of the neurosurgeons walked into the room where Adam and his parents were waiting and told them that the tumor was malignant. He had cancer. • Affirmed : The Last Triple Crown Winner by Lou Sahadi - Hardcover

Affirmed : The Last Triple Crown Winner by Lou Sahadi - Hardcover

In 1978, racing fans witnessed a rivalry for the ages when a horse hailing from Harbor View Farm named Affirmed and an eighteen-year-old jockey dubbed “Stevie Wonder” faced off against the celebrated Alydar and emerged victorious in each leg of the Triple Crown---by a combined margin of less than two lengths. In this long-overdue biography of Affirmed, veteran sportswriter Lou Sahadi captures the life and spirit of this indomitable horse who twice earned Horse of the Year honors and placed #12 on the Blood-Horse list of “Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century.”

The descendent of Man o’ War and War Admiral, Affirmed possessed an unrivaled combination of speed and heart. Sahadi chronicles how the initially docile chestnut colt began his stellar rise in 1977, winning seven times and placing twice in nine races. Entering the 1978 season, many experts speculated that Alydar, the latest prize product from the storied Calumet Farm, would prove himself the better horse on longer distances, as he had done in the Champagne Stakes the previous October. Trainer Laz Barrera opted to run Affirmed in three races in California—away from Alydar—in the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby, a strategy that paid off as Affirmed, under reigning Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year jockey Stevie Cauthen, bested his rival in three races that fascinated even the most casual of sports fans.

Affirmed also delivers fascinating subplots including that of jockey Louis Pincay Jr., who took over for Cauthen in the winter of 1979 and rode Affirmed to victory in the horse’s final seven races; and owner Louis Wolfson, the Wall Street financier who found redemption in Harbor View Farm with Affirmed after Wolfson served one year in a federal prison, his conviction having led to the resignation of Supreme Court justice Abe Fortas.

Sahadi draws on interviews with Cauthen, some members of the Wolfson family, and many more to tell the story of how Affirmed emerged from one of the most exciting showdowns in sports history to capture imaginations across America. Telling a story that transcended the Thoroughbred racing world, Affirmed finally gives this courageous horse his due.

Twisted by Jonathan Kellerman - USED Mass Market Paperback

Hollywood homicide detective Petra Connor has helped psychologist Alex Delaware crack tough cases in the past. And in Jonathan Kellerman’s New York Times bestseller Billy Straight she took the lead in the desperate hunt for a teenage runaway stalked by a vengeful murderer. Now the complex and wryly compassionate Petra is once again at the center of the action, in a novel of cunning twists and page-turning suspense.

Lifeless bodies sprawl in a dance-club parking lot after a brutal L.A. drive-by. Of the four seemingly random victims, one stands out: a girl with pink shoes who cannot be identified–and who, days later, remains a Jane Doe. With zero leads and no apparent motive, it’s another case destined for the cold file–until Petra decides to follow her instincts and descends into a world of traveling grifters and bloodthirsty killers, pursuing a possible eyewitness whose life is in mortal danger.

Finding her elusive quarry–alive–isn’t all Petra has on her plate: departmental politics threatens to sabotage her case, and her personal life isn’t doing much better. If all that wasn’t enough, Isaac Gomez, a whiz-kid grad student researching homicide statistics at the station house, is convinced he’s stumbled upon a bizarre connection between several unsolved murders. The victims had nothing in common, yet each died by the same method, on the same date–a date that’s rapidly approaching again. And that leaves Petra with little time to unravel the twisted logic of a cunning predator who’s evaded detection for years–and whose terrible hour is once more at hand.

“Why is it so hard to put down a Kellerman thriller?” asks Publishers Weekly. “It’s simple: the nonstop action leaves you breathless; the plot twists keep you guessing; the themes . . . are provocative.” Those in need of still further proof that “Kellerman has shaped the psychological mystery novel into an art form” (Los Angeles Times Book Review) need look no further than Twisted.

Truth or Dare by Jayne Ann Krentz - USED Mass Market Paperback

The New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz is at the top of her game with Truth or Dare.

    From Publishers Weekly

Zoe Luce, psychic interior decorator, has finally settled down to domestic life in Whispering Springs, Ariz., with private investigator Ethan Truax after their tempestuous courtship in Krentz's previous romantic thriller, Light in Shadow. However, sinister cobwebs of energy confront her when she enters certain rooms, threatening to make her lose her tenuous grip on sanity. Meanwhile, Arcadia Ames, Zoe's old friend from Candle Lake Manor Psychiatric Hospital, fears the husband she sacrificed her identity to escape has finally tracked her down. Krentz never fully explains exactly why Grant, Arcadia's husband, wants her dead, relying instead on facts revealed in Light in Shadow. Indeed, from beginning to end, this sequel feels more like an appendix to the last book than a novel in its own right, as Krentz forgoes a strong central plot to focus on the kind of warm and fuzzy details about Zoe and her Whispering Springs friends that most novels relegate to the epilogue. She fattens the story with pizza dinners, heartfelt talks and proffered slices of lemon meringue pie, but scrimps when the action picks up and offers limp, far-fetched conclusions to the book's various subplots. Though no one will begrudge the goodhearted characters from Whispering Springs their tasty tidbits, in her rush to get to the happy endings, Krentz leaves readers hungry for a more substantial story.

    From Booklist

In her latest paranormal tale, Krentz takes up the story of psychic interior designer Zoe and private investigator Ethan, who met and fell in love in Light in Shadow [BKL N 1 02]. They are now working to create a successful marriage, but different events in their pasts keep interfering with their hopes for wedded bliss. Still haunted by his brother's murder and his own pursuit of justice in that case, Ethan expects Zoe to dump him, just as his previous three wives did. Zoe is plagued by memories of her imprisonment in a private psychiatric sanatorium, as she unexpectedly encounters psychic "spider webs" clinging to several places she has recently visited. As Ethan and Zoe struggle with their pasts, both become caught up in the dilemma of Zoe's friend, Arcadia, who fears that her ex-husband has returned from the dead to settle an old score. With its potent combination of danger and thrills, sexy romance, and polished writing suffused with a deliciously tart sense of humor, the best-selling Krentz's sophisticated brand of romantic suspense will never go out of style with readers. • The Cultural Revolution in China by Joan Robinson - Paperback VINTAGE 1972

The Cultural Revolution in China by Joan Robinson - Paperback VINTAGE 1972

During the Cultural Revolution most western journalists saw China lurching to self-destruction in an orgy of random violence, mad adulation, inexplicable jargon and meticulous, meaningless ritual.  How, they asked, could the Red Guards believe their own wall posters?  What was the meaning of a 'party person in authority taking the capitalist road'? And how could the Thoughts fo Mao make crops grow on a stony hill?

In this documentary investigation, which she has now updated with an extended postscript, the author calls upon the Chinese themselves to explain their revolution.  Joan Robinson, Professor of Economics at Cambridge and author of the Pelican Economic Philosophy, visited China in late 1967.  From conversations, reported here, and from the key documents, which had not previously been published in the West, she focuses attention on the phenomenon most puzzling to those outside China--a ruler so hostile to his own administration that he incited and led a nation-wide popular revolution against it.

The Gupta age is considered to be the golden age of India. To Samudra Gupta goes the credit of spreading the Gupta empire. The Fourth book in this volume is on the life of Emperor Harsha, who is remembered till this day as a great ruler, not only because he was a brave military leader, but also because he was a man of noble impulses. Reaching for the Invisible God by Philip Yancey - Hardcover USED Nonfiction

"How do I relate to a God who is invisible when I'm never quite sure he's there?" -- Philip Yancey

Life with God doesn't always work out like you think it should. High expectations slam against the reality of personal weaknesses and unwelcome surprises. And the God who, you've been told, wants a personal relationship with you may seem remote, emotionally unavailable. Is God playing games? What can you count on this God for? How can you know God? This relationship with a God you can’t see, hear, or touch--how does it really work?

Reaching for the Invisible God offers deep, satisfying insights to the questions you are sometimes afraid to ask. Honest and deeply personal, here is straight talk on Christian living for the reader who wants more than pat answers to life's imponderables. Ultimately, Yancey shifts the focus from your questions to the One who offers himself in answer.

"A brilliant book. It is both profound and simple, the best blend, in my view. Simple is neither shallow, nor simplistic. The sections on doubt and God's 'absence' are classics." -- Rick Warren, pastor and author, The Purpose Driven Life

After Dark by Phillip Margolin - Paperback USED Fiction

Gone, But Not Forgotten rocketed Phillip Margolin into the select company of million-selling novelists. Here he displays again the same genius for best-selling suspense in another intricate, breathtaking thriller of multiple murder in the legal community of the Pacific Northwest.

Laura Rizzati, a law clerk for Oregon Supreme Court Justice Robert Griffen, is found slain late one night in the deserted courthouse. Her office is ransacked—but nothing seems to be missing. There are no suspects and no clues.

The following month Griffen himself is killed by a car bomb in the driveway of his Portland home. This time, though, there is a suspect: in a shocking turn of events, Abigail Griffen, star prosecutor in the Multnomah County District Attorney's office and estranged wife of Justice Griffen, is charged with first degree murder.

With the same gripping suspense that drove Gone, But Not Forgotten onto the bestseller lists, this is a complex legalthriller with a truly startling ending.

Don't wait until tomorrow--live your life today

You've spent a lifetime dreaming about your future, but as the future becomes the present, are you living your dream? Many people feel their dreams are just too impossible to reach, so they spend their lifetime stuck in a place that's easy. But living out your dream is easy if you know how to get there. You just need to anticipate what challenges will come your way and how to overcome them--whether it's fear, the need for control, having enough money, understanding how your dream fits into God's will, or six other common obstacles.

Don't wait until the pieces fall together to live the life you desperately long for. Make intentional decisions to live with purpose. Twentysomethings Shannon and Michael Primicerio reveal how they got unstuck: by deliberately living their lives now. Now is the time to get from where you are to where you want to go. We're all running out of time. Live your life now.

"Shannon and Michael understand their generation and the significant challenges facing so many in their age group. Life. Now. is a wonderfully practical book that will be of enormous help to many young people. It is also a great tool for premarital counseling."--Howard Dayton, CEO, Crown Financial Ministries
