Summer In The Land Of Skin by Jody Gehrman - Paperback Fiction

X marks the spot for Bellingham, Washington, on Anna Medina's self-discovery map.

Twenty-five-year-old Anna—restless, famished and emotionally numb—is following the long-cold trail of her father, a celebrated luthier, whose death has always haunted her. She has tracked his former business partner to a sailboat on Bellingham Bay, determined to pry from the old man the secrets of their guitarmaking trade, and maybe a few answers about her father.

Anna catches an echo of her musical father in Arlan, guitar player for a local band. Soon she's living on his sofa, hanging out with his girlfriend—having friends for the first time, even. And if Anna's new friends do drugs, read her journal and leave open a few too many bedroom doors, who's to say they aren't real friends? And if Anna has feelings for Arlan, who's to say where her loyalty lies?

  • In the Beginning...was the Command Line by Neal Stephenson - Paperback

In the Beginning...was the Command Line by Neal Stephenson - Paperback

This is "the Word" -- one man's word, certainly -- about the art (and artifice) of the state of our computer-centric existence. And considering that the "one man" is Neal Stephenson, "the hacker Hemingway" (Newsweek) -- acclaimed novelist, pragmatist, seer, nerd-friendly philosopher, and nationally bestselling author of groundbreaking literary works (Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, etc., etc.) -- the word is well worth hearing. Mostly well-reasoned examination and partial rant, Stephenson's In the Beginning... was the Command Line is a thoughtful, irreverent, hilarious treatise on the cyber-culture past and present; on operating system tyrannies and downloaded popular revolutions; on the Internet, Disney World, Big Bangs, not to mention the meaning of life itself.

    From Publishers Weekly

After reading this galvanizing essay, first intended as a feature for Wired magazine but never published there, readers are unlikely to look at their laptops in quite the same mutely complacent way. Stephenson, author of the novel Cryptonomicon, delivers a spirited commentary on the aesthetics and cultural import of computer operating systems. It's less an archeology of early machines than a critique of what Stephenson feels is the inherent fuzziness of graphical user interfacesAthe readily intuitable "windows," "desktops" and "browsers" that we use to talk to our computers. Like Disney's distortion of complicated historical events, our operating systems, he argues, lull us into a reductive sense of reality. Instead of the visual metaphors handed to us by Apple and Microsoft, Stephenson advocates the purity of the command line interface, somewhat akin to the DOS prompt from which most people flee in a technophobic panic. Stephenson is an advocate of Linux, the hacker-friendly operating system distributed for free on the Internet, and of BeOS, a less-hyped paradigm for the bits-and-bytes future. Unlike a string of source code, this essay is user-friendlyAoccasionally to a fault. Stephenson's own set of extended metaphors can get a little hokey: Windows is a station wagon, while Macs are sleek Euro-sedans. And Unix is the Gilgamesh epic of the hacker subculture. Nonetheless, by pointing out how computers define who we are, Stephenson makes a strong case for elegance and intellectual freedom in computing. (Nov.)

The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams - Paperback

The Animator's Survival Kit : A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators by Richard Williams

“Williams is miles ahead of anyone in the world of animation.” ―The New York Times

The definitive book on animation, from the Academy Award-winning animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Animation is one of the hottest areas of filmmaking today--and the master animator who bridges the old generation and the new is Richard Williams. During his fifty years in the business, Williams has been one of the true innovators, winning three Academy Awards and serving as the link between Disney's golden age of animation by hand and the new computer animation exemplified by Toy Story.

Perhaps even more important, though, has been his dedication in passing along his knowledge to a new generation of animators so that they in turn could push the medium in new directions. In this book, based on his sold-out master classes in the United States and across Europe, Williams provides the underlying principles of animation that every animator--from beginner to expert, classic animator to computer animation whiz --needs. Urging his readers to "invent but be believable," he illustrates his points with hundreds of drawings, distilling the secrets of the masters into a working system in order to create a book that will become the standard work on all forms of animation for professionals, students, and fans.

    About the Author

Richard Williams has won more than 250 international awards for his animation. He currently lives in Wales.

  • The Art of Zootopia by Jessica Julius - Hardcover

The Art of Zootopia by Jessica Julius - Hardcover

Disney's newest animated feature, Zootopia, is a comedy-adventure starring Officer Judy Hopps, a rookie bunny cop who has to team up with fast-talking scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to crack her first case in the all-animal city of Zootopia. This lushly illustrated book offers a behind-the-scenes view of the elaborate artistry involved in creating the film.

"I had very little expectations one way or the other from it, but wound up enjoying Disney's latest animated feature immensely, which made digging into The Art Of Zootopia even more of a delight. As we've come to expect with these lovely hardcover tomes, it's packed with design and development artwork and insight into the creation of the film."--A Site Called Fred

"A fantastic companion book to a fantastic movie...The Art of Zootopia is such a treat in the way that it not only revisits the movie's delightfully heartwarming characters and fantastic art, but gives us an engaging look at what went into the making of Zootopia. The book starts with author Jessica Julius describing the movie's original story pitch - a 1960s spy story - and how it evolved over four years into the modern day tale of underdogs, prejudice, and fighting for justice for all. She gives us the scoop on how the characters were developed (balancing a feminine yet tough, naïve yet sharp, optimistic yet challenged bunny cop isn't so easy!), shows us amazing "sets" I don't even remember in the fast-moving film, and she lets us in on all kinds of fun details, like the fact that it took eight months to get the various animals' fur just right (color, texture, and direction of fur growth takes more contemplation than I realized). We are also privy to many sketches and scenes that were eventually cut from the film...The Art of Zootopia is both a captivating companion book to the movie, as well as a stand-alone coffee table book that doesn't need any knowledge of the movie to be appreciated." --Wink Books

"If you liked Zootopia and (like me) you love seeing what goes into making a movie, you'll love this book. It's filled with concept art and stories about how the movie came to be: for instance, it started off as a spy caper featuring a bunny spy. There's so much thought that went into the design of everything from buildings to vehicles to clothing, and this book gives you the opportunity to get a closer look at it all. There's a chapter on each of the sections of Zootopia, like Tundratown and Little Rodentia-perfect for poring over those blink-and-you-missed-it details from the film." --Geek Dad
