Edith Wharton was a prominent American author in the early 20th century. Wharton won the Pulitzer Prize and was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on 3 different occasions. Wharton's writing was notable for its wit and psychological insight, especially when commenting on the American upper class. The Age of Innocence, a novel which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921, is considered to be Wharton's greatest work. The book centers around an upper-class couple who are about to be married, and the bride's scandalous cousin who threatens to come between them.
