Troubled Bones : A Medieval Noir by Jeri Westerson

Disgraced knight Crispin Guest gets himself into some serious trouble in London and as a result is forced to accept an assignment far out of town. The Archbishop of Canterbury has specifically requested Guest to investigate a threat against the bones of saint and martyr Thomas a Beckett, which are on display in the cathedral in Canterbury. The archbishop has received letters threatening the safety of the artifacts, and he wants Guest to protect them and uncover whoever is after them.

When he arrives at Canterbury, Guest is accosted by an old acquaintance from court - one Geoffrey Chaucer - and is surrounded by a group in town on a pilgrimage. Trapped amongst the pilgrims (who were, quite possibly, the model for Chaucer's famous story cycle), looking for a murderer, a hidden heretic and a solution to the riddle that will allow him to go back home, Crispin Guest finds his considerable wit and intellect taxed to its very limit.

The Woman in the Window : A Novel by A.J. Finn - Hardcover

Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller!

    “Astounding. Thrilling. Amazing.” —Gillian Flynn

    “Unputdownable.” —Stephen King

“A dark, twisty confection.” —Ruth Ware

    “Absolutely gripping.” —Louise Penny

For readers of Gillian Flynn and Tana French comes one of the decade’s most anticipated debuts, to be published in thirty-six languages around the world and already in development as a major film from Fox: a twisty, powerful Hitchcockian thriller about an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime in a neighboring house.

    It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening . . .

Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.

Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems.

Twisty and powerful, ingenious and moving, The Woman in the Window is a smart, sophisticated novel of psychological suspense that recalls the best of Hitchcock.

“Astounding. Thrilling. Lovely and amazing....Finn has created a noir for the new millennium, packed with mesmerizing characters, stunning twists, beautiful writingand a narrator with whom I’d love to split a bottle of pinot. Maybe two bottles—I’ve got a lot of questions for her.” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Gillian Flynn)

The Woman in the Window is one of those rare books that really is unputdownable. The writing is smooth and often remarkable. The way Finn plays off this totally original story against a background of film noir is both delightful and chilling.” (Stephen King)

“Twisted to the power of max. Hitchcockian suspense with a 21st century twist.” (Bestselling author Val McDermid)

The Woman in the Window is a tour de force. A twisting, twisted odyssey inside one woman’s mind, her illusions, delusions, reality. It left my own mind reeling and my heart pounding. An absolutely gripping thriller.” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny)

Compelling, wrenching, and gasp-for-breath exciting―I was blown away.” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill)

A dark, twisty confection with an irresistible film noir premise. Hitchcock would have snapped up the rights in a heartbeat.” (New York Times bestselling author Ruth Ware)

The Woman in the Window is the most riveting thriller I’ve read since Gone Girl. A. J. Finn is a bold new talent with the touch of a master.” (New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen)

“The rocket fuel propelling The Woman in the Window, the first stratosphere-ready mystery of 2018, is expertise. . . . Dear other books with unreliable narrators: This one will see you and raise you.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Finn’s debut lives up to the hype. . . . A riveting and mature first novel that stands out in a crowded genre.” (Library Journal [starred review])

“Gripping, compelling, and utterly intriguing.” (Liz Nugent, author of the 2017 BEA “Buzz Book” Unraveling Oliver)

The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi - Paperback Speculative Fiction

    WATER IS POWER

"An intense thriller and a deeply insightful vision of the coming century, laid out in all its pain and glory. It's a water knife indeed, right to the heart." —Kim Stanley Robinson, author of Aurora

In the near future, the Colorado River has dwindled to a trickle. Detective, assassin, and spy, Angel Velasquez “cuts” water for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, ensuring that its lush arcology developments can bloom in Las Vegas. When rumors of a game-changing water source surface in Phoenix, Angel is sent south, hunting for answers that seem to evaporate as the heat index soars and the landscape becomes more and more oppressive. There, he encounters Lucy Monroe, a hardened journalist with her own agenda, and Maria Villarosa, a young Texas migrant, who dreams of escaping north. As bodies begin to pile up, the three find themselves pawns in a game far bigger and more corrupt than they could have imagined, and when water is more valuable than gold, alliances shift like sand, and the only truth in the desert is that someone will have to bleed if anyone hopes to drink.

“[A] fresh, genre-bending thriller. . . .  Reading Paolo Bacigalupi's richly imagined novel The Water Knife brings to mind the movie Chinatown. Although one is set in the past and the other in a dystopian future, both are neo-noir tales with jaded antiheroes and ruthless kingpins who wield water as lethal weapons to control life—and mete out death. . . . Bacigalupi weaves page-turning action with zeitgeisty themes. . . . His use of water as sacred currency evokes Frank Herbert's Dune. The casual violence and slang may bring to mind A Clockwork Orange. The book's nervous energy recalls William Gibson at his cyberpunk best. Its visual imagery evokes Dust Bowl Okies in the Great Depression and the catastrophic 1928 failure of the St. Francis Dam that killed 600 people and haunted its builder, Mulholland, into the grave. . . . Reading the novel in 93-degree March weather while L.A. newscasts warned of water rationing and extended drought, I felt the hot panting breath of the desert on my nape and I shivered, hoping that Bacigalupi's vision of the future won't be ours.” —Denise Hamilton, Los Angeles Times

The Lost Boy : A Novel in Hardcover by Camilla Lackberg

"Topnotch writing and plot." ― Criminal Element

"Camilla Läckberg proves why she’s called Sweden’s ‘queen of crime’ in her superb seventh novel. The Lost Boy combines a gripping police procedural with a ghost story while poignantly delving into the devastating effects of grief, especially among mothers. Delving into the intricacies of police work, Läckberg also turns The Lost Boy into a psychological thriller that digs deep into each character’s psyche. While the shadowy ghosts permeate the story, Läckberg keeps this supernatural aspect akin to those in the gothic masterpiece The Turn of the Screw." ― The Associated Press

"Yet another tremendous Nordic noir writer." ― Philadelphia Inquirer

From the #1 international bestseller and Swedish crime sensation, Camilla Lackberg's latest psychological thriller ensnares Detective Patrik Hedstrom in a confounding new murder case.

Detective Patrik Hedstrom is no stranger to tragedy. A murder case concerning Fjällbacka’s dead financial director, Mats Sverin, is a grim but useful distraction from his recent family misfortunes.

It seems Sverin was a man who everybody liked yet nobody really knew — a man with something to hide . . .

His high school sweetheart, Nathalie, has just returned to Fjallbacka with her five-year-old son — perhaps can she shed some light on who Sverin really was?
However, Nathalie has her own secret. If it’s discovered, she will lose her only child. As the investigation stalls, the police have many questions. But there is only one that matters: Is there anything a mother would not do to protect her child?

"The Nordic crime-fiction trend sparked by The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Henning Mankell’s novels shows no sign of abating. One of the best writers to emerge is Lackberg. The books shine." ― Entertainment Weekly

THE NAIL-BITING NEW STORY FROM THE MILLION COPY BESTSELLING AUTHOR

"Is this the best crime writer in the world today? If you're looking for a mystery to get lost in during lockdown..."The Times, UK

"A world-class crime writer...One of the most astonishing plots of modern crime fiction"Sunday Times, UK

"It is nothing less than a landmark in modern crime fiction." The Times, UK

From Ragnar Jónasson, the award-winning author of the international bestselling Ari Thór series, The Girl Who Died is a standalone thriller about a young woman seeking a new start in a secluded village where a small community is desperate to protect its secrets.

Teacher Wanted At the Edge of the World

Una wants nothing more than to teach, but she has been unable to secure steady employment in Reykjavík. Her savings are depleted, her love life is nonexistent, and she cannot face another winter staring at the four walls of her shabby apartment. Celebrating Christmas and ringing in 1986 in the remote fishing hamlet of Skálar seems like a small price to pay for a chance to earn some teaching credentials and get her life back on track.

But Skálar isn’t just one of Iceland’s most isolated villages, it is home to just ten people. Una’s only students are two girls aged seven and nine. Teaching them only occupies so many hours in a day and the few adults she interacts with are civil but distant. She only seems to connect with Thór, a man she shares an attraction with but who is determined to keep her at arm’s length.

As darkness descends throughout the bleak winter, Una finds herself more often than not in her rented attic space―the site of a local legendary haunting―drinking her loneliness away. She is plagued by nightmares of a little girl in a white dress singing a lullaby. And when a sudden tragedy echoes an event long buried in Skálar’s past, the villagers become even more guarded, leaving a suspicious Una seeking to uncover a shocking truth that’s been kept secret for generations.

The Expanse Boxed Set : Leviathan Wakes, Caliban's War and Abaddon's Gate Paperbacks by James S. A. Corey

"The science fictional equivalent of A Song of Ice and Fire...only with fewer beheadings and way more spaceships."―NPR Books on Cibola Burn

"Combining an exploration of real human frailties with big sf ideas and exciting thriller action, Corey cements the series as must-read space opera."―Library Journal(starred review) on Cibola Burn

"The Expanse series is the best space opera series running at full tilt right now, and Cibola Burn continues that streak of excellence."―io9 on Cibola Burn

"Corey's splendid fourth Expanse novel blends adventure with uncommon decency."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Cibola Burn

"A politically complex and pulse-pounding page-turner.... Corey perfectly balances character development with action... series fans will find this installment the best yet."―Publishers Weekly on Abaddon's Gate

"It's been too long since we've had a really kickass space opera. LEVIATHAN WAKES is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro. So where's the second book?"―George R.R. Martin on Leviathan Wakes

"An excellent space operatic debut in the grand tradition of Peter F. Hamilton."―Charles Stross on Leviathan Wakes

"High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey's epic space drama (after Caliban's War and Leviathan Wakes) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy author Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended."―Library Journal on Abaddon's Gate

"Literary space opera at its absolute best."―io9.com on Abaddon's Gate

Sleeper - All False Moves by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips - Paperback Graphic Novel

    From Booklist

In the second story arc of Sleeper, a spy comic in which the colorfully code-named operatives possess superpowers, the already ambiguous morality of its milieu grows murkier. The emphasis is on the dichotomized life of government agent Holden Carver, who infiltrates a shadowy, all-powerful criminal cartel. The suspense and the series' overarching paranoia are ratcheted up as Carver becomes more uncomfortable with his undercover role and grows more emotionally attached to his beautiful colleague, the amoral Miss Misery. Meanwhile, the mysterious mastermind of the crime cartel learns of his operation's infiltration and comes dangerously close to unmasking Carver. Writer Brubaker's intelligent plotting and gritty dialogue make the story work even when it skirts outrageousness, and Phillips' noirish art and skillful storytelling portray brutal action and talking-heads sequences equally effectively. As in Out in the Cold [BKL Mr 1 04], the protagonists' superpowers, even downplayed as they are, constitute Sleeper's least impressive element. But if couching intelligent espionage yarns in genre trappings makes them viable for today's mainstream comics readers . . . Gordon Flagg

Key Art Works : The Musee d'Orsay - Paperback (Color) Illustrated Art Book

‟This is a well written book that deals with 12 of the well known artist at this museum. Interesting opinions, not fully expounded on, only 1 or 2 works of each artist, mostly dealt with paintings and the history of the evolution of art (again, mostly painting) during this particular time period, about 1850 to 1920. Great time line in the back that covers political, artistic and social events.”—Joan L. Peirce

‟Vanina Costa's book on the Musee D'Orsay is the kind of book that makes you interested in something that you were only vaguely acquainted with before you read it. 12 paintings by twelve 19th century painters featured at the Musee D'Orsay are analyzed for their style and content, with a sort of expert detail that you would not expect to see in a guidebook to a museum. The one regret I have is that Renoir was not included in this survey, but we get to learn about Seurat, Courbet and Vuillard as well as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh , Degas, Cezanne and Gaughin. A really good read that should be made widely available to patrons of art museums across North America, Europe and Japan and elsewhere in Asia.”—Michael Gutierrez-May (Mikegtz@aol.com)

  • Inherent Vice : A Novel by Thomas Pynchon - Hardcover

Inherent Vice : A Novel by Thomas Pynchon - Hardcover

Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon--Private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era

“His most accessible book...the author's comical mystery (musings about the end of national innocence) as well as the wordplay so relentlessly present in any of his books, keep Pynchon's "Inherent Vice" from being just another thriller — and ensure it is never less than entertaining”The Denver Post

In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre that is at once exciting and accessible, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the sixties, you weren't there.

It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble. Undeniably one of the most influential writers at work today, Pynchon has penned another unforgettable book.

Faithful by Janet Fox - Paperback

Sixteen-year-old Maggie Bennet's life is in tatters. Her mother has disappeared, and is presumed dead. The next thing she knows, her father has dragged Maggie away from their elegant Newport home, off on some mad excursion to Yellowstone in Montana. Torn from the only life she?s ever known, away from her friends, from society, and verging on no prospects, Maggie is furious and devastated by her father?s betrayal. But when she arrives, she finds herself drawn to the frustratingly stubborn, handsome Tom Rowland, the son of a park geologist, and to the wild romantic beauty of Yellowstone itself. And as Tom and the promise of freedom capture Maggie?s heart, Maggie is forced to choose between who she is and who she wants to be.

    From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up–It's May of 1904, and 16-year-old Maggie Bennet should be planning her debut into Newport society. Unfortunately, her father has other plans. He takes her to Yellowstone National Park, following a lead on Maggie's mother, who disappeared the year before and is presumed dead. Upon their arrival, Papa reveals that they are broke and he has taken a job as architect at the park. As Maggie tries to start a new life and piece together the mystery of her mother's connection to Yellowstone, she is torn between her conflicting desires. She longs to take her proper place in society, something offered by George Graybull, the rich and powerful but arrogant and shallow older man who is courting her. At the same time, she wants freedom and true love, represented by Tom, the kind but poor son of a geologist. The story follows Maggie's struggle to overcome her own prejudices and society's limitations. The wilderness of Yellowstone, which is lovingly and beautifully depicted, reflects her inner turmoil and yearning for freedom, deemed madness in her bohemian mother. Though the style doesn't always ring true to the period and the plot and characterization sometimes lack subtlety, the gradual revelation of the truth about Maggie's mother, the developing relationship between Maggie and Tom, and the thrilling episodes sprinkled throughout will engage readers.Erin Carrillo, formerly at Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

City Primeval : High Noon in Detroit by Elmore Leonard - Paperback

“As gritty and hard-driving a thriller as you’ll find….The action never stops, the language sings and stings.”
    Washington Post

The City Primeval in Elmore Leonard’s relentlessly gripping classic noir is Detroit, the author’s much-maligned hometown and the setting for many of the Grand Master’s acclaimed crime novels. The “Alexander the Great of crime fiction” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) shines in these urban mean streets, setting up a downtown showdown between the psychopathic, thrill-killing “Oklahoma Wildman” and the dedicated city copy who’s determined to take him down. The creator of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of TV’s Justified fame, Elmore Leonard is the equal of any writer who has ever captivated readers with dark tales of heists, hijacks, double-crosses, and murder—John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Robert Parker included—and nobody then or now is better.

    About the Author

Elmore Leonard wrote more than forty books during his long career, including the bestsellers Raylan, Tishomingo Blues, Be Cool, Get Shorty, and Rum Punch, as well as the acclaimed collection When the Women Come Out to Dance, which was a New York Times Notable Book. The short story "Fire in the Hole," and three books, including Raylan, were the basis for the FX hit show Justified. Artemis : A Novel by Andy Weir, author of The Martian - Hardcover

The bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller—a heist story set on the moon.

“An action-packed techno-thriller of the first order…the perfect vehicle for humans who want to escape, if only for a time, the severe gravity of planet earth. The pages fly by.”USA Today

Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich.

Not crazy, eccentric-billionaire rich, like many of the visitors to her hometown of Artemis, humanity’s first and only lunar colony. Just rich enough to move out of her coffin-sized apartment and eat something better than flavored algae. Rich enough to pay off a debt she’s owed for a long time.

So when a chance at a huge score finally comes her way, Jazz can’t say no. Sure, it requires her to graduate from small-time smuggler to full-on criminal mastermind. And it calls for a particular combination of cunning, technical skills, and large explosions—not to mention sheer brazen swagger. But Jazz has never run into a challenge her intellect can’t handle, and she figures she’s got the ‘swagger’ part down.

The trouble is, engineering the perfect crime is just the start of Jazz’s problems. Because her little heist is about to land her in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself.

Trapped between competing forces, pursued by a killer and the law alike, even Jazz has to admit she’s in way over her head. She’ll have to hatch a truly spectacular scheme to have a chance at staying alive and saving her city.

Jazz is no hero, but she is a very good criminal.

    That’ll have to do.

“Revitalizes the Lunar-colony scenario, with the author’s characteristic blend of engineering know-how and survival suspense...Jazz is a great heroine, tough with a soft core, crooked with inner honesty.”Wall Street Journal

Propelled by its heroine’s wisecracking voice, set in a city that’s at once stunningly imagined and intimately familiar, and brimming over with clever problem-solving and heist-y fun, Artemis is another irresistible brew of science, suspense, and humor from #1 bestselling author Andy Weir.

“Smart and sharp…Weir has done it again [with] a sci-fi crowd pleaser made for the big screen.”—Salon.com
