A New York Times Bestselling Author

The master of the medical thriller returns with his most heart-pounding tale yet - an electrifying page-turner as vivid as today's headlines, featuring New York City medical examiners Dr. Laurie Montgomery and Dr. Jack Stapleton.

    From Publishers Weekly ( * - starred review )

The bestselling physician/author is in top form as he revisits the love/hate relationship between New York City medical examiners Laurie Montgomery and her lover, Jack Stapleton (last seen in 1999's Vector) in this gripping medical chiller. Childless and facing her 43rd birthday, Laurie moves out when Jack, still traumatized by the accidental deaths of his wife and children over a decade ago, refuses to talk marriage and babies. They've still got to work together at the office of the chief medical examiner, though, and it's there that Laurie's charged with autopsying the bodies of two people who died after minor surgeries at the same Manhattan hospital. As similar deaths mount up, Laurie struggles to convince Jack et al. that something's fishy. (Early on, a shadow plot introduces homicidal hospital employee Jasmine Rakoczi and Mr. Bob, the mastermind of a sinister but undefined plot to "sanction" selected patients using an undetectable medical agent.) Laurie's superiors forbid her to discuss her suspicions with anyone outside the OCME, but she disobeys these orders when she meets the dreamboat chief of medicine at the hospital in question and successfully engages his interest in her theory that a serial killer is on the loose. The body count climbs as another hospital is involved and political pressure mounts to suppress information. True love runs a rocky course, and the plot thickens before the denouement crackles to an electric edge-of-the-seat finale.

The Fourth Perimeter by Tim Green - USED Mass Market Paperback

Kurt Ford raised his son after his wife died. To compound his misery, his son, who joined the secret service, has now supposedly committed suicide. Kurt discovers others have died after meeting the president so he knows whom he has to kill!

    From Publishers Weekly

If Green was as obvious on the football field as he is in the writing of his latest thriller (after The Letter of the Law), his NFL career would have been a lot shorter. The first clue to what's going on in this story about a former Secret Service agent trying to investigate and avenge the death of his son comes early on, followed almost immediately by three more thuddingly obvious markers. Any chance they will prove to be red herrings quickly disappears: they are all exactly what they seem to be. Too bad, because the basic premise is sound and promising: Kurt Ford, former Secret Service agent and successful computer entrepreneur, knows his beloved son, Collin, better than anyone, and is ready to stake his life on the certainty that Collin an able and ambitious Secret Service agent himself would never commit suicide, as the Washington, D.C., police have concluded. So when a former rival within the Treasury Department, David Claiborne, contacts Kurt secretly and tells him that two other Secret Service agents have also died under mysterious circumstances, it's definitely possible that all three agents witnessed something they shouldn't have when they accompanied the president to a clandestine meeting at a Maryland farmhouse. As Kurt uses his own experience to plan a private vendetta, fans of Green's previous books might hope for and certainly deserve a few more plot twists and a much more interesting resolution. Instead, they are served up an all too predictable finale. 3-city author tour.

Twisted by Jonathan Kellerman - USED Mass Market Paperback

Hollywood homicide detective Petra Connor has helped psychologist Alex Delaware crack tough cases in the past. And in Jonathan Kellerman’s New York Times bestseller Billy Straight she took the lead in the desperate hunt for a teenage runaway stalked by a vengeful murderer. Now the complex and wryly compassionate Petra is once again at the center of the action, in a novel of cunning twists and page-turning suspense.

Lifeless bodies sprawl in a dance-club parking lot after a brutal L.A. drive-by. Of the four seemingly random victims, one stands out: a girl with pink shoes who cannot be identified–and who, days later, remains a Jane Doe. With zero leads and no apparent motive, it’s another case destined for the cold file–until Petra decides to follow her instincts and descends into a world of traveling grifters and bloodthirsty killers, pursuing a possible eyewitness whose life is in mortal danger.

Finding her elusive quarry–alive–isn’t all Petra has on her plate: departmental politics threatens to sabotage her case, and her personal life isn’t doing much better. If all that wasn’t enough, Isaac Gomez, a whiz-kid grad student researching homicide statistics at the station house, is convinced he’s stumbled upon a bizarre connection between several unsolved murders. The victims had nothing in common, yet each died by the same method, on the same date–a date that’s rapidly approaching again. And that leaves Petra with little time to unravel the twisted logic of a cunning predator who’s evaded detection for years–and whose terrible hour is once more at hand.

“Why is it so hard to put down a Kellerman thriller?” asks Publishers Weekly. “It’s simple: the nonstop action leaves you breathless; the plot twists keep you guessing; the themes . . . are provocative.” Those in need of still further proof that “Kellerman has shaped the psychological mystery novel into an art form” (Los Angeles Times Book Review) need look no further than Twisted.

Truth or Dare by Jayne Ann Krentz - USED Mass Market Paperback

The New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz is at the top of her game with Truth or Dare.

    From Publishers Weekly

Zoe Luce, psychic interior decorator, has finally settled down to domestic life in Whispering Springs, Ariz., with private investigator Ethan Truax after their tempestuous courtship in Krentz's previous romantic thriller, Light in Shadow. However, sinister cobwebs of energy confront her when she enters certain rooms, threatening to make her lose her tenuous grip on sanity. Meanwhile, Arcadia Ames, Zoe's old friend from Candle Lake Manor Psychiatric Hospital, fears the husband she sacrificed her identity to escape has finally tracked her down. Krentz never fully explains exactly why Grant, Arcadia's husband, wants her dead, relying instead on facts revealed in Light in Shadow. Indeed, from beginning to end, this sequel feels more like an appendix to the last book than a novel in its own right, as Krentz forgoes a strong central plot to focus on the kind of warm and fuzzy details about Zoe and her Whispering Springs friends that most novels relegate to the epilogue. She fattens the story with pizza dinners, heartfelt talks and proffered slices of lemon meringue pie, but scrimps when the action picks up and offers limp, far-fetched conclusions to the book's various subplots. Though no one will begrudge the goodhearted characters from Whispering Springs their tasty tidbits, in her rush to get to the happy endings, Krentz leaves readers hungry for a more substantial story.

    From Booklist

In her latest paranormal tale, Krentz takes up the story of psychic interior designer Zoe and private investigator Ethan, who met and fell in love in Light in Shadow [BKL N 1 02]. They are now working to create a successful marriage, but different events in their pasts keep interfering with their hopes for wedded bliss. Still haunted by his brother's murder and his own pursuit of justice in that case, Ethan expects Zoe to dump him, just as his previous three wives did. Zoe is plagued by memories of her imprisonment in a private psychiatric sanatorium, as she unexpectedly encounters psychic "spider webs" clinging to several places she has recently visited. As Ethan and Zoe struggle with their pasts, both become caught up in the dilemma of Zoe's friend, Arcadia, who fears that her ex-husband has returned from the dead to settle an old score. With its potent combination of danger and thrills, sexy romance, and polished writing suffused with a deliciously tart sense of humor, the best-selling Krentz's sophisticated brand of romantic suspense will never go out of style with readers. But when Evangeline suddenly appears on a twilit Paris street, Verlaine finds her nature to be unlike any of the other creatures he so mercilessly pursues, casting him into a spiral of doubt and confusion that only grows when she is abducted before his eyes by a creature who has topped the society’s most-wanted list for more than a century. The ensuing chase drives Verlaine and his fellow angelologists from the shadows of the Eiffel Tower to the palaces of St. Petersburg and deep into the provinces of Siberia and the Black Sea coast, where the truth of Evangeline’s origins—as well as forces that could restore or annihilate them all—lie in wait.

Conceived against an astonishing fresh tableau of history and science, Angelopolis plumbs Russia’s imperial past, modern genetics, and ancient depictions of that most potent angelic appearance—the Annunciation of Gabriel—in a high-octane tale of abduction, treasure seeking, and divine warfare as the fate of humanity once again hangs in the balance.

Street Smart by Nicholas Coleridge - A Novel in Trade Paperback

Saskia Thompson is the hottest editor in the world.  Her magazine StreetSmart is an explosive mix of celebrity gossip, high fashion, cutting-edge photography and investigative journalism.  She is the undisputed queen of London and New York.  And then she is found dead.  Max, her war-reporter brother, has always avoided her glitzy world, but reluctantly he is sucked into the magazine business when Saskia leaves him StreetSmart in her will.  But the vultures are gathering, just waiting for Max to fail--and he soon learns that the magazine world is deadlier than a war zone.

    From Kirkus Reviews

The tony world of high-gloss international fashion magazines is the setting for this wonderfully trashy if slogging thriller by Condé Nast UK director Coleridge (With Friends Like These, 1997, etc.).When Saskia Thompson, editor and publisher of the hot, hip lifestyle magazine StreetSmart, is found dead in her posh New York apartment, few believe she's committed suicide. It's up to her brother, Max, an erstwhile photojournalist who scarcely knew her, to sort things out and keep the magazine afloat. Though Max would be more comfortable dodging bullets in Rwanda or Chechnya, he soon learns that the world of international publishing is not all that dissimilar. He quickly makes allies (Kitty Marr, the beautiful and sexy fashion assistant who was with Saskia the night she died; Philip Landau, Saskia's polished attorney) and enemies (the conniving deputy editor at the London office, Bob Troup, whom Max summarily dismisses; and Racinda Blick, the fashion editor who throws a hissy fit over her poor seating at the Milan show). Saskia was murdered, of course, and it could been have one of her “boy toys.” In addition to all the hunks she dated for the tabloids, such as Kiefer Sutherland and Leonardo DiCaprio, Saskia made frequent use of the escort services, not to mention her employees. Max can’t figure out if she was murdered by the mysterious, unknown father of her neglected son, Cody, or by one of her many jealous rivals who are now trying to buy StreetSmart. His chief suspect is Freddie Saidi, an oily, cruel former arms-dealer who also had a thing for the deceased. Etienne Bercuse, head of an international luxury goods empire, is another possibility. Could these competitors also be behind the attempts to sabotage StreetSmart’s latest issue, the one with the exclusive cover photo of Madonna and her new beau?

  • Cowboys & Aliens by Joan D. Vinge - Paperback Movie Tie-In

Cowboys & Aliens by Joan D. Vinge - Paperback Movie Tie-In

Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: Cowboys & Aliens.  Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers—Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world.

1875.  New Mexico Territory.  A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution.  The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist.  What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford).  It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky.  Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation.  As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force.  With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation.  United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival..

The script for Cowboys & Aliens is by Star Trek’s Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman  & Damon Lindelof (television’s Lost) and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, screen story by Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Steve Oedekerk, based on Platinum Studios’ “Cowboys & Aliens” created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Grazer, Howard, Rosenberg, Kurtzman and Orci produce.  Spielberg, Favreau, Denis L. Stewart, Bobby Cohen, Randy Greenberg and Ryan Kavanaugh executive produce.

This novelization is an exciting, action-packed story that starts with an amnesiac stranger and ends in a blaze of glory. Absolution, New Mexico, a town that lives in fear of its powerful benefactor, cattle baron Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde, is full of unhappy people--from the colonel's spoiled, directionless son who tries to drink it dry, to the doctor-turned-saloon-keeper stuck in the remains of what was once a gold-rush boom town, to the preacher who struggles to find meaning in a place that seems as lifeless as the arid desert around it.  But when a mysterious  stranger with an odd bit of hardware on his wrist arrives, he brings with him a new kind of trouble that nobody could imagine in their wildest dreams.

It's bad enough that the stranger is a wanted outlaw. But he's followed by murderous demons from the sky that attack the town and snatch away a bunch of townsfolk, including Dolarhyde's son. The posse that rides out to reclaim the abducted people encounters a series of obstacles that make the stranger's ominous presence seem almost like a good thing. Attacked by a murderous outlaw band, besieged by Apaches with no love for any white man,  and terrorized by the demons themselves and their terrible death-machines, no posse has ever had an adventure as strange as this one . . .

Alive with the color and spirit of the Old West and the sense of wonder of the most entertaining science fiction, this enthralling adventure is a unique and memorable experience readers won't want to miss.
